The Ongoing Discovery of the Historic Gospel

We don’t need a new gospel: what the Father has done through Christ in the power of the Spirit, revealed in the Scriptures and the historic witness of the church, is more than enough to heal everything that’s wrong with the world.

What we do need - sometimes - is to rediscover the riches of that gospel that have become encrusted under false dichotomies, sloganeering, and culture wars. I find that difficult cultural topics are fruitful ground for that kind of rediscovery, and that diving in can reveal depths of the gospel we miss in the shallows.

In my “Gospel According To…” series of teachings, I seek to bring the whole gospel, from the whole of the Scriptures, into conversations about some of the thorniest issues of our day. Usually, the results of that interaction don’t neatly fit into the multiple-choice options we feel we have to choose from.

I relish that: because Jesus didn’t fit into the boxes of his day either. It gives me hope that sometimes, perhaps, we might be on to something in these conversations…

About Me

I have been the lead pastor at International Anglican Church in Colorado Springs since 2015. The hunger of these saints is what catalyzes and sharpens my teaching in these areas. What a gift it is to be able to walk into these conversations with such a caring and curious community! I’m also deeply thankful to my friends at Trinity Anglican-Wenatchee, EMI, Summit Ministries, and the Navigators who have invited me to lead them into these conversations more deeply.

I moved to the Springs after serving as an Assistant Pastor at an Anglican church in Denver. Spiritual influences include my believing parents, the small middle Tennessee Methodist congregation I grew up in, the Presbyterian Church in America, the Navigators Christian ministry, and Denver Seminary. (Yep, I’m a bit of a mutt.) But these past seasons are alive and well in me, continually shaping me across the decades

When I’m not writing sermons or keeping coffee shops afloat with my black tea addiction, I’m reveling in the gifts of my family, including my wife Sarah and my daughters Zoe, Livvy, Cosette & Myriel. If we’re not in the Springs, we’re probably in our pop-up camper somewhere across the western US.
